Where are the jobs Spotlighting skill shortages in Australia
Where are the jobs Spotlighting skill shortages in Australia Five industries with the brightest futuresPosted March 16, 2015, by Vivien LuuWhen it comes to yur career, it pays to be strategic and to think big picture. While we always encourage you to follow your dreams, and do what you love, its also smart to look at things beyond of your control like where the market is headed and which jobs our nation really needs. But between work, family and general life, who has the time to do that? We hear you. Thats why weve sifted through the national reports and big data, to bring you five industries that are currently experiencing skill shortages, and are poised to undergo huge growth in coming years.Click on an icon below to find out more. 1. Healthcare and aged careAustralias healthcare industry has seen enormous growth (and arguably enormous strain) over the last several years as a result of the ageing population. And moving forward, it seems, this trend isnt going away any time s oon. The Commonwealth Governments recent 2015 Intergenerational Reportprojects that by 2055, the government will be spending twice as much on healthcare per person, and over three times more on aged care per person.20152055Healthcare costs$2830 per person$6460 per personAged care costs$620 per person$2000 per persontable-border td border1px solid 444 table-border border1px solid 000 table-border td, table-border th padding3px border1px solid 444 table-border tr td + td + td, table-border tr th + td + td table-border tr td + td , table-border tr th + tdCouple this with our increased life expectancy and the fact that by 2055 there will be approximately 40,000 Australians over the age of 100 (compared to 5000 centenarians currently), and its no wonder the Deloitte Access Economics division has tipped industries related to healthcare and aged care to boom over the next 20 years. Over the next two decades, no market is likely to see better growth in Australia than preventative health and wellness services. Were living longer but we also want to keep living better, and that tension will generate billions of dollars in opportunities, the Deloittes Position for Prosperity report states. According to Deloitte, the top health and aged care subsectors to watch over the next 20 years includeResidential aged carePreventative health and wellnessDigital delivery of healthWhat this means for aged careThe report highlights that just as the baby boomers changed the nature of Australias schools in the 1950s and 60s they will create a wave of change through the aged care sector. In the future we can expect an overall lift in the quality and standard of nursing homes, and with it will come the need for more competent and better-qualified staff. Its a gaping hole Australia is already feeling the effects of, with the government attempting to address the need for better aged care training through its Certificate IV VET FEE-HELP trial program. Under the scheme, students wh o study a Certificate IV in Aged Carefrom an approved education provider (except for those studying in South Australia and Victoria) are eligible to apply for VET FEE-HELP, a study loan scheme thats usually only available to students undertaking a diploma degree or higher. What this means for healthcareUnsurprisingly, continued growth in the healthcare sector will also mean continued demand for particular specialities and niche skills. As Deloitte points out, allied health professionals from a range of fields such as nursing, optometry, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology, physiotherapy and occupational therapy will find themselves in high demand. Department of Employment data and the Hays Quarterly Report on healthcareunderscores this growing trend, with the following occupations in high demandRegistered nurses, particularly those with managerial experience within aged carePodiatristsPhysiotherapistsClinical psychologistsAccredited mental health professionals MidwivesSonographersA ged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI) specialistsIf youre looking to become qualified for the health care industry, weve got a variety of coursesto help you move into this rapidly growing sector.2. Education and trainingAustralia is experiencing an undersupply of teachers qualified to teach mathematics and science, but an oversupply of teachers for every other discipline. Its an alarming trend thats hurting our classrooms and making it exceedingly difficult for graduate teachers to secure work. But this is all about to change. According to a recent Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) report, the population boom which began in 2008 is increasing demand for teachers in primary schools, and in 2018 we will see this demand flow onto secondary schools as well.Supply generally has outstripped demand, particularly for generalist primary teachers, and in some secondary subjects, says ACER chief executive, Professor Geoff Masters. But this report indicates that the demand for teach ers is currently strong and is forecast to remain high in most states for the next 10 years.Deloitte has made similar forecasts, pointing to four major subsectors that will create substantial growth for the education and training industryPrivate schoolingInternational educationReskilling an ageing workforceOnline educationInternational education tops the list, with Deloitte tipping this sub-industry as one of its fantastic five sectors to work in over the next 20 years. At present the international education sector is Australias fourth largest export earner, generating $15 billion a year in income and creating approximately 100,000 jobs. With Asias emerging middle-class looking to undertake English-based qualifications, our proximity to Asia, robust education system and enviable lifestyle and climate, Australia is in a prime fleck to ride this wave of growth. What this means for the education industryThese trends suggest that teaching professionals and educators will be in hot deman d over the next 20 years, especially for those savvy enough to specialise in growth sectors like international education, the private school system, as well as reskilling the baby boomer generation. When you combine this data with the Hays Quarterly Report on educationyoull see that the following occupations are in short supplySecondary teachers, particularly those teaching maths, scienceand ITSecondary teacher librariansVocational and adult educatorsChildcare educators (diploma-qualified educators are in particular demand)Keen on upskilling for the education and training industry? Look through our education courseshere.3. ConstructionAustralias most recent property boom hasnt just ramped up the price tag of our homes and brought in a wave of Chinese investors, its also enabled enormous growth and job opportunity in the construction industry.According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the construction industry can expect solid growth this year, with a record number of 195, 936 new dwellings projected to be built in 2014/2015.Its the reason a recent SEEK Job Growth Reportidentified construction as one of its top six industries looking to hire in 2015, with the Department of Employment Australian Jobs 2014 reportnoting a stronger demand for trade workers, particularly those working in construction. What this means for constructionIn short, it means more jobs and continued demand for specialist trades, particularly for those who have experience working on residentialand commercial projects. It also means greater government support and financial assistance, too. For instance, if you complete a Certificate III or IV qualification in any trade listed on the National Skills Needs List, youre eligible to take out a Trade Support Loanto help you with living and learning expenses during your apprenticeship. If you study in Queensland or Victoria with an approved provider, you may even be eligible for VET FEE-HELP when you complete a Certificate IV in Buildin g and Construction (Building). Based upon the Hays Quarterly Report on the construction industry, the Department of Employment 2014 Skill Shortage report, and the National Skills Needs List, behauptung are the occupations that are currently in demandSurveyorsValuersConstruction estimatorsBricklayers*Project managers(PMs with experience working on projects valued between $5-10 1000000 are particularly sought after)Finishes forepersons (particularly experienced high-rise forepersons)Structures forepersonsStonemasons*Roof tilers*Solid plasterers**Appears on the National Skills Needs List, which means you may be eligible for financial assistanceif you study a certificate III or IV qualification in these trades. If youd like to make a career change into the building and construction sector, or simply want to update your qualifications, check out our range of online building and construction courses.4. Travel and tourismThe tourism industry continues to experience severe shortages, with a recent Service Skills Australia reporthighlighting an extremely critical shortage of qualified and skilled labour across the sector. This shortage will only intensify in coming years as tourism is poised to become one of Australias five biggest growth industries. In 2013, ABS statistics showed that we welcomed 6.5 million international tourists to our shores. In 2033, Deloitte forecasts this number will double to 13.6 million international visitors. The government has acknowledged tourism as vital to our economy, and through its Tourism 2020 initiativeaims to nurture this rapidly growing industry. Australia is uniquely lokalitted to capitalise on the demand from the emerging middle classes of Asia seeking food, wine and natural landscape tourism experiences, says Federal Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb. It is vitally important that we not only develop the skills of our current workforce but attract new entrants to tourism and hospitality to meet this growing demand. What this means for tourismItll mean more jobs, more business opportunities and a greater need for skilled workers in the industry. This trend will also increase demand for hospitality workers to service tourist hot spots and travel businesses. A quick look over the National Skills Needs List and Service Skills Australia report shows us the following occupations are in short supplyHotel and motel managersBar attendants and baristasCafe and restaurant managersTourism and travel agents WaitersBakers*Butchers*Cooks/chefs*Pastrycooks** Appears on the National Skills Needs List, which means you may be eligible for financial assistance if you study a certificate III or IV qualification in these trades. Passionate about quality service and stellar travel experiences? Get qualified to work in this fast-paced industry with our tourismand hospitality courses.5. AgricultureThe worlds population is on the rise. Forecasts predict that over the next 20 years we will grow by 60 million p eople each year. And, as our ranks swell, so too will our appetites. As the Deloitte report notes, global food demand will rise alongside the worlds population, and Australia is in a unique position to take advantage of this. Thanks to the quality of our produce, sizable ocean resources and proximity to Asia, the report says agribusiness and ocean resources are industries that can expect substantial growth in coming years. The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around Australia is actually larger than our countrys landmass, meaning we hold the exclusive rights to the ocean surrounding our shores. This makes our ocean resources an asset with huge potential as there is rising scope to farm the ocean. On top of that, the National Farmers Federation has found that demand for Australian agricultural produce continues to grow. So its not hard to see how Deloitte has come to the conclusion that Australia can be a long-term winner in this sector, particularly in grains, beef, dairy, wi ne, oil seeds and emerging areas like aquaculture. Unfortunately, the agriculture workforce is ageing, and over the past decade the number of students completing agriculture qualifications has almost halved. What this means for the agriculture industryIn short, it means more jobs, particularly for skilled agricultural professionals. Successfully increasing our agricultural output, however, will demand innovation in fields like environmental sciencesand land management as the need to protect our agricultural resources becomes greater than ever. It also means greater financial assistance from the government. In a bid to attract more students to the industry, the government has extended its VET FEE-HELP scheme to NSW and VIC students studying a Certificate IV in Agriculture a loan scheme thats usually only available for students studying a diploma or above. So which jobs is the industry currently lacking? 3 things to remember when you want to quit your job
3 things to remember when you want to quit your job3 things to remember when you want to quit your jobIts Wednesday and the week isnt over yet. You woke up and felt the pressure to make the long, sickening commute to your day job. In short, youre annoyed. Its not just that you have a day job. Its the fact that the long hours spent doing something you dont love are chipping into the energy that you do have working on your passion project that you are trying to make a reality. To top it all off theres the human element. Youve had years of tense moments with the coworkers of your past. And at this point in your life if you have one more person attempt a verbal beatdown or make you question yourself youre going to lose it.But, it doesnt have to be a frustrating experience.Theres something else thats deeper. It isnt just that youre too much of your own person at the office, which in that type of environment, can make you feel like a permanent outsider. Its the fact that you dont know how t o stand up for yourself. No one gave you a guide book when you entered the corporate world. No one prepared you for the different personalities youd have to be around almost 24/7.Yes, you dont find the work interesting, but you could have more enthusiasm toward it if you had the confidence to always know what to say to other people who tried to make you feel small. Here are a few things you can do to help you make the decision if you should quit or not.1. Determine how quitting will alter your lifeActions have consequences. And it todays digital age of short term gratification you may not really care about the long term consequences. But if youre at point A, you need to get to point B. And there are a lot of steps so that you can finally rest easy and be in a career full time that you LOVE. You have heard this statement many times in your life. But do you actually understand its meaning? If you quit because of one, two or three bad interactions you will spend the next two to three mon ths having to get acquainted with another job. You will have an income gap, and you will ultimately delay your dream even more.2. Stay assertive instead of waveringCommunication skills are critical to your success whether in the workplace or in your personal life. But its alarming when you are caught out of the blue by someone who challenges you or questions a statement you make. Externally you need to show strength but inside you feel rattled and shaken.Suddenly just going out there and being yourself can become a minefield. Especially by people who you deem as intelligent. Instead of being nice one day because youre feeling happy and throwing all your assertive behavior out of the window because youre feeling happy, remember this. Stay assertive Assertive skills are defined as being able to stand up for your own or other peoples rights in a calm, positive, nice and strong way. In the past women have been told to be quiet, so our assertive skills are still a work in process.Dont sh y away from being assertive. In a positive, empowering way it can take you from a wallflower to a trusted voice. Asking in a nice way Could you please review my essay? instead of Do you think you could review my essay?3. Have someone to talk about the negative situations withWhen I worked in an office there were so many times, even multiple times per day where I had to walk outside the building to call a life coach to talk about a negative interaction I just had with a coworker. She would listen closely as I just needed to talk. Its like if you got bitten by a snake and you needed to extract the poison out of your body. Thats what this person was like for me. A remedy for the poison I just experienced. Having that person as a rock to lean on during years of getting ping-ponged around at the office prolonged any quick decisions to quit my job. It kept me on course when I wanted to throw in the towel multiple times. Some final thoughts when you still want to quitDont just quit your job because it seems like it is cutting in your time for your passion project and because on top of that there are negative interpersonal actions that you are unsure of how to handle. Instead of letting these interactions knock you off of your career path keep these tips in mind to keep you on your course for success.Dont fall off the course. Take action. The next time you feel like quitting your job, ask yourself what you need to work on to become truly unbothered by your environment. Test your strength.Gabriella DiDio created Inner Strength Training Academy for young women. She writes about assertiveness, confidence, and workplace dilemmas. Military Do-It-Yourself (DITY) Moves
Military Do-It-Yourself (DITY) MovesMilitary Do-It-Yourself (DITY) MovesWhen transitioning from one duty station to the next, the Do It Yourself (DITY) move can be a lot more work than it was worth. Normally, when a person in the military makes a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move, the government hires a commercial contractor to pack and move their household goods (HHG). The military will move, free of charge, HHG, up to the members authorized weight limit (which depends on rank and whether or bedrngnis the member has dependents). However, if you have a team of people to help you, the DITY move can be a fun challenge and will definitely burn some calories for the day. The Personally Procured Move Program (formerly Do-it-Yourself DITY Move) is designed to provide the military member an alternative to move their household goods on their own. Members may move their personal property themselves, using rental equipment, their own vehicle, or by hiring their own commercial carrier. Und er this program, military members can receive reimbursement up to 100% of the Government Constructive Cost (kooperationsrat der arabischen staaten des golfes), if they hire their own carrier, or an incentive payment of 95% of the GCC if they move the property on their own. An advance operating allowance can be authorized to defray out of pocket moving expense (rental equipment, HHG mover charges, packing material, etc.). Individual situations may vary widely so prior to making a personally procured move it is recommended that the military member be counseled and get approval by the base personal property office. Failure to get approval from the personal property office MAY result in non-payment of the reimbursement claim or incentive payment. Contact your local Personal Property arbeitszimmer to help you determine the most cost-effective method of moving your household goods. Personally procured moves to overseas areas are not recommended. Its almost impossible to move your property to an overseas location for what the government pays contractors to do. Participation in the Personally Procured Move Program is voluntary. Military members may choose a Personally Procured Move, a Government Move, or a combination of the two methods, subject to entitlement limitations. Options The personally procured move program offers the following options Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) A privately owned vehicle can be used to affect your move. If you use a travel trailer or motorhome, contact your Personal Property Shipping Office for special guidance. Any POV in tow must be disconnected prior to weighing. Rental Vehicle You procure the rental equipment and the accessories yourself and perform all the labor. Sources of rental equipment must be bonafide rental vendors such as RYDER, U-HAUL, etc. Commercial You contract directly with commercial carriers vice rental contractors. Incentives for this type of move are authorized under public law and will be calculated on the same basis as a PERSONALLY PROCURED MOVE by rental vehicle or POV. For all options, empty and full certified weight tickets are required. Be sure you have your vehicle weighed at a CERTIFIED weigh station. The towing vehicle and trailer must be weighed as a complete unit at one time on a large platform scale or on two smaller scales. Axle weights are acceptable. Imprint or official stamp with name and location of Weigh StationSignature and title of official certifying the weighingLegible imprint of the weight and date recorded.Your name, rank, and social security number.Identification of vehicle weighed. You should retain a copy of each weight ticket for your personal records. Its important that this weight be as accurate as possible. Over-estimating may result in a lower reimbursement or incentive payment. Insurance The Government is not liable for any loss or damages that occur during a personally procured move. Since you perform all of the packing and transportation by yourself or with the assistance of a contracted carrier, any loss or damage is presumed to be the result of your or your agents improper packing or handling. You should also seriously consider purchasing commercial insurance coverage, either through the moving company or through a commercial insurance company to protect yourself from financial loss. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have or purchase the proper insurance to cover all rental equipment, your POV, and your household goods. When using a commercial HHG carrier you should ensure the carrier provides insurance on your HHG in accordance with local and state laws. If in items go to storage, claims for loss or damage to your household goods while in storage are not payable by the military claims offices. Make sure you purchase insurance to cover your goods while in storage. Storage You should have a residence available for delivery of the goods at destination within the period specified for the move. If storage is required at the destination, you SHOULD consider doing a Government move. Temporary storage (up to 90 days) incidental to a personally procured moved is authorized at Government expense. However, reimbursement will be based on the Governments cost to store a like amount of weight and will not include an incentive payment. If you must procure storage, you should use a bonafide commercial storage facility (to include a mini-storage facility) and submit a claim for reimbursement for personally procured storage. This will be submitted on a DD Form 1351-2 to the Personal Property Office. Reimbursement Once you have reached your destination, you must submit a claim for the balance of your reimbursement or incentive to the Personal Property Office on your new base, within 45 days of your move date. Claim should consist of the DD Form 2278, DD Form 1351-2, certified weight tickets (empty and full), and complete set of orders. Your reimbursement will be equal to 100% of the GCC or your incentive will be equal to 95% of the GCC, depending on which option you chose to use. Weight Ticket Identification To ensure proper identification of the weight tickets and subsequent payment of your incentive allowance, it is essential that the following information is included on each weight ticket obtained Imprint or official stamp with name and location of Weigh StationSignature and title of official certifying the weighingLegible imprint of the weight and date recorded.Your name, rank, and social security number.Identification of vehicle weighed. You should retain a copy of each weight ticket for your personal records. Its important that this weight be as accurate as possible. Over-estimating may result in a lower reimbursement or incentive payment. Definition of Household Goods (HHG) Items associated with the home and all personal effects belonging to a member and dependents on the effective date of the members PCS or TDY order that legally may be accepted and transported by an auth orized commercial transporter. HHG Also Include professional books, papers, and equipment (PBPE),spare POV parts and a pickup tailgate when removed, integral or attached vehicle parts that must be removedmiscellaneous associated hardware, vehicles other than POVs (such as motorcycles, mopeds, snowmobiles, etc HHG Do Not Include personal baggage when carried free on an airplane, automobiles, trucks, vans and similar motor vehiclesairplanes mobile homes camper trailersfarming vehicleslive animalscordwood and building materialsitems for resale, disposal or commercial use rather than for use by the member and dependentsprivately owned live ammunitionarticles that otherwise would qualify as HHG but are acquired after the effective date of PCS orders except for bona fide replacements for articles that have become inadequate, worn out, broken, or unserviceable on/after the effective date of orders.

A Guide for Training New Employees
A Guide for Training New EmployeesA Guide for Training New EmployeesManaging new employees takes time, patience, and a lot of communication. You need to train them on the specific procedures at your company, what is expected of them, how they will be evaluated, and how to avoid common mistakes. You also have to remember that all individuals learn at different rates and in different ways. While the task can seem overwhelming, with the right kind of focus, the rewards can be great, for both you and the new employee. Listen to Their Ideas Even as you train new employees on how things should be done, dont forget to listen to their ideas about how to do things differently. By listening to them, you encourage creativity and innovation. You also demonstrate that you value them as individuals and as contributors and in the process may get ideas from them that would actually improve the department. New employees are in a unique position to bring fresh eyes to a situation and arent bogged down in business as usual. You dont have to accept their ideas for changes, but you do need to listen to them. Protect Your Senior Employees Employees that have been with the organization for a while are a valuable resource. Much like the effect on older children when a new baby is brought home, you need to be sensitive to the needs of your experienced gruppe members. While new employees will take up a big chunk of your time, make sure you dont neglect the rest of your kollektiv. Use As Mentors Another way to make sure that the senior members of your team continue to feel valued is to elicit them to serve as mentors for the new employees. Its also a good way to reduce the amount of your time you have to spend training new employees. It also fosters a sense of comradery and team spirit. Set Realistic Goals You need to set specific goals fornew employees and communicate those goals clearly. Just make sure that the goals you set are realistic. Remember, the training phase t akes time, but if not properly trained, employees will end up losing time asking questions and attempting to figure things out. When you set goals for new employees, make sure they match their experience and skill level. Provide Frequent Feedback This is key. New employees especially need frequent feedbackbecause youwant to correct any mistakes before they become bad habits. Also, if employees are making mistakes it becomes difficult for them to learn related tasks. Be sure to keep your feedback positive and focus on the behavior, not the employee. Dont Play Favorites While managers need to be fair and treat employees the same, its especially important when working with a new employee on your team. Showing favoritism always results in employees competing for your attention and breeds competitiveness among team members. And, while you have a different relationship with the mora senior members of the team, dont let that cause you to be less than fair with all of your other empl oyees. Focus on Team Building As you train and develop a new employee, you also want to help them become part of the team. Make sure their schedule includes time for them to interact with others. Beyond the mentoring you offer, provide opportunities for people from both groups (senior-level employees and newbies) to work together. Giveall new employees ample notice of upcoming team events and explain beforehand the parameters of the event and how they can participate. Reward and Celebrate Team and Individual Success As your new employees become better trained and more productive, they will begin to meet the goals you have set for them. Be sure to celebrate those successes at the same time you increase their goals. As they begin to contribute more and more to the overall results of the team,be sure to recognize and celebrate the improved performance of the entire team. And dont forget to celebrate the success of the senior members as well.
