3 things to remember when you want to quit your job

3 things to remember when you want to quit your job3 things to remember when you want to quit your jobIts Wednesday and the week isnt over yet. You woke up and felt the pressure to make the long, sickening commute to your day job. In short, youre annoyed. Its not just that you have a day job. Its the fact that the long hours spent doing something you dont love are chipping into the energy that you do have working on your passion project that you are trying to make a reality. To top it all off theres the human element. Youve had years of tense moments with the coworkers of your past. And at this point in your life if you have one more person attempt a verbal beatdown or make you question yourself youre going to lose it.But, it doesnt have to be a frustrating experience.Theres something else thats deeper. It isnt just that youre too much of your own person at the office, which in that type of environment, can make you feel like a permanent outsider. Its the fact that you dont know how t o stand up for yourself. No one gave you a guide book when you entered the corporate world. No one prepared you for the different personalities youd have to be around almost 24/7.Yes, you dont find the work interesting, but you could have more enthusiasm toward it if you had the confidence to always know what to say to other people who tried to make you feel small. Here are a few things you can do to help you make the decision if you should quit or not.1. Determine how quitting will alter your lifeActions have consequences. And it todays digital age of short term gratification you may not really care about the long term consequences. But if youre at point A, you need to get to point B. And there are a lot of steps so that you can finally rest easy and be in a career full time that you LOVE. You have heard this statement many times in your life. But do you actually understand its meaning? If you quit because of one, two or three bad interactions you will spend the next two to three mon ths having to get acquainted with another job. You will have an income gap, and you will ultimately delay your dream even more.2. Stay assertive instead of waveringCommunication skills are critical to your success whether in the workplace or in your personal life. But its alarming when you are caught out of the blue by someone who challenges you or questions a statement you make. Externally you need to show strength but inside you feel rattled and shaken.Suddenly just going out there and being yourself can become a minefield. Especially by people who you deem as intelligent. Instead of being nice one day because youre feeling happy and throwing all your assertive behavior out of the window because youre feeling happy, remember this. Stay assertive Assertive skills are defined as being able to stand up for your own or other peoples rights in a calm, positive, nice and strong way. In the past women have been told to be quiet, so our assertive skills are still a work in process.Dont sh y away from being assertive. In a positive, empowering way it can take you from a wallflower to a trusted voice. Asking in a nice way Could you please review my essay? instead of Do you think you could review my essay?3. Have someone to talk about the negative situations withWhen I worked in an office there were so many times, even multiple times per day where I had to walk outside the building to call a life coach to talk about a negative interaction I just had with a coworker. She would listen closely as I just needed to talk. Its like if you got bitten by a snake and you needed to extract the poison out of your body. Thats what this person was like for me. A remedy for the poison I just experienced. Having that person as a rock to lean on during years of getting ping-ponged around at the office prolonged any quick decisions to quit my job. It kept me on course when I wanted to throw in the towel multiple times. Some final thoughts when you still want to quitDont just quit your job because it seems like it is cutting in your time for your passion project and because on top of that there are negative interpersonal actions that you are unsure of how to handle. Instead of letting these interactions knock you off of your career path keep these tips in mind to keep you on your course for success.Dont fall off the course. Take action. The next time you feel like quitting your job, ask yourself what you need to work on to become truly unbothered by your environment. Test your strength.Gabriella DiDio created Inner Strength Training Academy for young women. She writes about assertiveness, confidence, and workplace dilemmas. Military Do-It-Yourself (DITY) Moves

Military Do-It-Yourself (DITY) MovesMilitary Do-It-Yourself (DITY) MovesWhen transitioning from one duty station to the next, the Do It Yourself (DITY) move can be a lot more work than it was worth. Normally, when a person in the military makes a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move, the government hires a commercial contractor to pack and move their household goods (HHG). The military will move, free of charge, HHG, up to the members authorized weight limit (which depends on rank and whether or bedrngnis the member has dependents). However, if you have a team of people to help you, the DITY move can be a fun challenge and will definitely burn some calories for the day. The Personally Procured Move Program (formerly Do-it-Yourself DITY Move) is designed to provide the military member an alternative to move their household goods on their own. Members may move their personal property themselves, using rental equipment, their own vehicle, or by hiring their own commercial carrier. Und er this program, military members can receive reimbursement up to 100% of the Government Constructive Cost (kooperationsrat der arabischen staaten des golfes), if they hire their own carrier, or an incentive payment of 95% of the GCC if they move the property on their own. An advance operating allowance can be authorized to defray out of pocket moving expense (rental equipment, HHG mover charges, packing material, etc.). Individual situations may vary widely so prior to making a personally procured move it is recommended that the military member be counseled and get approval by the base personal property office. Failure to get approval from the personal property office MAY result in non-payment of the reimbursement claim or incentive payment. Contact your local Personal Property arbeitszimmer to help you determine the most cost-effective method of moving your household goods. Personally procured moves to overseas areas are not recommended. Its almost impossible to move your property to an overseas location for what the government pays contractors to do. Participation in the Personally Procured Move Program is voluntary. Military members may choose a Personally Procured Move, a Government Move, or a combination of the two methods, subject to entitlement limitations. Options The personally procured move program offers the following options Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) A privately owned vehicle can be used to affect your move. If you use a travel trailer or motorhome, contact your Personal Property Shipping Office for special guidance. Any POV in tow must be disconnected prior to weighing. Rental Vehicle You procure the rental equipment and the accessories yourself and perform all the labor. Sources of rental equipment must be bonafide rental vendors such as RYDER, U-HAUL, etc. Commercial You contract directly with commercial carriers vice rental contractors. Incentives for this type of move are authorized under public law and will be calculated on the same basis as a PERSONALLY PROCURED MOVE by rental vehicle or POV. For all options, empty and full certified weight tickets are required. Be sure you have your vehicle weighed at a CERTIFIED weigh station. The towing vehicle and trailer must be weighed as a complete unit at one time on a large platform scale or on two smaller scales. Axle weights are acceptable. Imprint or official stamp with name and location of Weigh StationSignature and title of official certifying the weighingLegible imprint of the weight and date recorded.Your name, rank, and social security number.Identification of vehicle weighed. You should retain a copy of each weight ticket for your personal records. Its important that this weight be as accurate as possible. Over-estimating may result in a lower reimbursement or incentive payment. Insurance The Government is not liable for any loss or damages that occur during a personally procured move. Since you perform all of the packing and transportation by yourself or with the assistance of a contracted carrier, any loss or damage is presumed to be the result of your or your agents improper packing or handling. You should also seriously consider purchasing commercial insurance coverage, either through the moving company or through a commercial insurance company to protect yourself from financial loss. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have or purchase the proper insurance to cover all rental equipment, your POV, and your household goods. When using a commercial HHG carrier you should ensure the carrier provides insurance on your HHG in accordance with local and state laws. If in items go to storage, claims for loss or damage to your household goods while in storage are not payable by the military claims offices. Make sure you purchase insurance to cover your goods while in storage. Storage You should have a residence available for delivery of the goods at destination within the period specified for the move. If storage is required at the destination, you SHOULD consider doing a Government move. Temporary storage (up to 90 days) incidental to a personally procured moved is authorized at Government expense. However, reimbursement will be based on the Governments cost to store a like amount of weight and will not include an incentive payment. If you must procure storage, you should use a bonafide commercial storage facility (to include a mini-storage facility) and submit a claim for reimbursement for personally procured storage. This will be submitted on a DD Form 1351-2 to the Personal Property Office. Reimbursement Once you have reached your destination, you must submit a claim for the balance of your reimbursement or incentive to the Personal Property Office on your new base, within 45 days of your move date. Claim should consist of the DD Form 2278, DD Form 1351-2, certified weight tickets (empty and full), and complete set of orders. Your reimbursement will be equal to 100% of the GCC or your incentive will be equal to 95% of the GCC, depending on which option you chose to use. Weight Ticket Identification To ensure proper identification of the weight tickets and subsequent payment of your incentive allowance, it is essential that the following information is included on each weight ticket obtained Imprint or official stamp with name and location of Weigh StationSignature and title of official certifying the weighingLegible imprint of the weight and date recorded.Your name, rank, and social security number.Identification of vehicle weighed. You should retain a copy of each weight ticket for your personal records. Its important that this weight be as accurate as possible. Over-estimating may result in a lower reimbursement or incentive payment. Definition of Household Goods (HHG) Items associated with the home and all personal effects belonging to a member and dependents on the effective date of the members PCS or TDY order that legally may be accepted and transported by an auth orized commercial transporter. A Guide for Training New Employees

A Guide for Training New EmployeesA Guide for Training New EmployeesManaging new employees takes time, patience, and a lot of communication. You need to train them on the specific procedures at your company, what is expected of them, how they will be evaluated, and how to avoid common mistakes. You also have to remember that all individuals learn at different rates and in different ways. While the task can seem overwhelming, with the right kind of focus, the rewards can be great, for both you and the new employee. Listen to Their Ideas Even as you train new employees on how things should be done, dont forget to listen to their ideas about how to do things differently. By listening to them, you encourage creativity and innovation. You also demonstrate that you value them as individuals and as contributors and in the process may get ideas from them that would actually improve the department. New employees are in a unique position to bring fresh eyes to a situation and arent bogged down in business as usual. You dont have to accept their ideas for changes, but you do need to listen to them. Protect Your Senior Employees Employees that have been with the organization for a while are a valuable resource. Much like the effect on older children when a new baby is brought home, you need to be sensitive to the needs of your experienced gruppe members. While new employees will take up a big chunk of your time, make sure you dont neglect the rest of your kollektiv. Use As Mentors Another way to make sure that the senior members of your team continue to feel valued is to elicit them to serve as mentors for the new employees. Its also a good way to reduce the amount of your time you have to spend training new employees. It also fosters a sense of comradery and team spirit. Set Realistic Goals You need to set specific goals fornew employees and communicate those goals clearly. Just make sure that the goals you set are realistic. Remember, the training phase t akes time, but if not properly trained, employees will end up losing time asking questions and attempting to figure things out. When you set goals for new employees, make sure they match their experience and skill level. Provide Frequent Feedback This is key. New employees especially need frequent feedbackbecause youwant to correct any mistakes before they become bad habits. Also, if employees are making mistakes it becomes difficult for them to learn related tasks. Be sure to keep your feedback positive and focus on the behavior, not the employee. Dont Play Favorites While managers need to be fair and treat employees the same, its especially important when working with a new employee on your team. Showing favoritism always results in employees competing for your attention and breeds competitiveness among team members. And, while you have a different relationship with the mora senior members of the team, dont let that cause you to be less than fair with all of your other empl oyees. Focus on Team Building As you train and develop a new employee, you also want to help them become part of the team. Make sure their schedule includes time for them to interact with others. Beyond the mentoring you offer, provide opportunities for people from both groups (senior-level employees and newbies) to work together. Giveall new employees ample notice of upcoming team events and explain beforehand the parameters of the event and how they can participate. Reward and Celebrate Team and Individual Success As your new employees become better trained and more productive, they will begin to meet the goals you have set for them. Be sure to celebrate those successes at the same time you increase their goals. As they begin to contribute more and more to the overall results of the team,be sure to recognize and celebrate the improved performance of the entire team. And dont forget to celebrate the success of the senior members as well.

3 Recruiting Tactics That Need to Make a Comeback

3 Recruiting Tactics That Need to Make a ComebackTheres no more exciting time than when your company is growing. Your team creates positions to reach more customers and pursue new business endeavors. Right now, theres also an unfortunate downside to expanding your organization a lack of talent. In fact, 77 percent of companies planned to increase their workforce by at least 25 percent, per our 2018 Growth Hiring Trends report. Yet at the beginning of December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported there were 7.1 million positions unfilled. Its clear recruiters are facing a lack of active job landbinnenseekers. While this is a new situation for talent acquisition professionals, the solution is surprisingly old-school. Right now, candidates hold the power and they dont want to be treated like another file in your ATS. While technology is incredibly important to recruiting, its time to look back at tactics that have fallen to the wayside and find a way to blend them with todays trends. 1. Focusing on in-person networkingTechnology has given us countless new ways to meet and engage with job seekers. From apps to social media, its possible for recruiters to find candidates from around the world. But at the same time, its important to remember the power of relationships built on in-person networking.Great candidates receive messages from recruiters all the time. Often, all the names and emails blur together for these job seekers. Mass messaging also has an impersonal feel that doesnt give the best first impression. By attending in-person networking events, you create a foundation with talent thats built on trust. Candidates can look you in the eye and see how sincere you are about addressing their professional needs. But dont just make time for in-person recruiting when youre desperate to fill a role. Any time you meet someone new at a professional event, find out more about who they are. Later, write notes about their skills and personality to keep with their contact information. You might not have a job for them at the moment, but they could be perfect for a future opportunity. When you reach out about that role with more personal details about their fit, theyll recall meeting you and it will hold more weight than if youd started the relationship with a mass email. Its time for in-person networking to make a comeback in recruiting.Click To Tweet2. Focusing on potential, not experienceMuch of the hiring process is about finding evidence of a candidates skills. Recruiters look at resumes, ask about previous experiences, and call references. For a long time, this was one of the best strategies for identifying talent. But now companies are looking for different, less common skills.Big shifts in technology and business have opened doors for organizations. But the changes came so quickly, the workforce hasnt been able to adapt yet. In fact, in our previously mentioned study, the No. 1 problem respondents faced was a lack of qualified candidates. One s olution is prioritizing potential during the hiring process. Look for candidates who are willing to learn and are excited about the new direction your company is taking. While it might take time to train them, it saves time searching for the perfectly-qualified candidate. To determine whether a candidate will have potential once trained, focus on understanding their thought process during the interview. The applicant might not have the right answers right now, but by observing how they interpret information and approach problems, you can see how they would react. One good option is to pose a problem outside the candidates wheelhouse. Present a scenario to see how they work. For example, you can ask job seekers how they would go about making an iPhone. Few people know all it would take to recreate a device, but candidates with a high capacity to learn will ask questions and break down their options in an insightful way.3. Focusing on quality over quantity when contacting potential can didatesWhen unemployment is high, finding job seekers is like shooting fish in a barrel. This is why recruiters started sending out mass emails to attract candidates. You could reach out to hundreds of people and the odds of getting responses from several qualified candidates were very high. Now, the most talented workers already have jobs. So when they see an impersonal email from a recruiter, they send it straight to the trash. Those messages are too vague to tempt them away from their current employer. Instead of sending out tons of recruiting messages, start focusing on the quality of each one. You might receive fewer candidate leads, but those who do respond will have a genuine interest in your position.Take time to research candidates by looking at their online profiles. This will paint a picture of who they are and what theyre looking for professionally. With that information, you can send the candidate an engaging email, specific to them.If youre unsure what personal touches work best, try the following approachesInclude a recent article related to their interestsReference a mutual connection you have on social mediaDiscuss a specific part of their resume you find impressive and how it relates to your organizationAlso be sure to include more detailed information about the organization and the role. People are unlikely to leave a job they know and are comfortable in. To get candidates to take a aussicht on your company, theyll need a clear idea of what theyre getting into.Take the time to get to know potential candidates before reaching out. recruitingClick To TweetRight now, its not easy finding quality employees. But if youre willing to revisit recruiting tips from yesteryear, youll be able to engage with candidates in a unique and effective way.

Sportswriter Job Description and Career Profile

Sportswriter Job Description and Career ProfileSportswriter Job Description and Career ProfileSportswriters keep fans in touch with their favorite sports and gruppes. With television providing immediate coverage, in-depth reporting is expected from todays sportswriters. They not only write about what happens in the game, but the reasons teams succeed or fail. Besides game coverage, sportswriters cover team news, like player transactions and coaching changes. They write feature stories on players and coaches and provide insight on trends involving the team or sport they cover. Opportunities With the netz providing more sports media outlets than ever before, todays sports writers have numerous opportunities. Twenty years ago, sportswriters typically worked for newspapers, or perhaps magazines, but the field has changed vastly. Today, sportswriters leise work for traditional outlets but they also may be employed by sports news websites, team websites, or even work on their own blog. Many sportswriters also add expertise to radio, television, and streaming video coverage. The opportunities are as varied as the sports covered, but the key to all of these communication forms is concisely giving information in an entertaining and creative fashion. Typical Day Many sports writers have a specific beat, meaning they cover a specific team or sport throughout a season, or even throughout a year. Because many games are at night, sportswriters rarely work a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. More typical is working early in the day at home to pitch story ideas with editors, call or email sources for possible stories, and write stories. The sportswriter heads out to watch a teams game. Before the game, the writer talks with sources about the teamand reads through team notes for possible ideas and keeps an eye out for breaking news. Sports writers typically use laptop computers. To make deadlines, they often begin writing while the game is still being played. After the game is ov er, sports writers send their stories to their media outlet for editing. Besides the main story, they also typically send in shorter stories, or notes, about the game. The Good Sportswriters typically enjoy what they are doing. Although they remain neutral at the games they cover- objectivity is a must- they get to see top games, teams, and athletes. Sportswriters spend much of their time out of the office and may travel extensively. While sportswriters do not compete on the field, they do enjoy competing to get stories first and providing readers with the best information. ESPNs Adam Schefter is an example of that. The variety of outlets provides many ways for the writer to tell his or her story. Writers have access to teams and players that few others ever enjoy. Covering top athletes can be fascinating. Sportswriters witness top competition, always with a prime seat. Many sportswriters also move on to column writing, in which they add their own views on sporting events. Often times, these column writers become well known in a community.Sportswriters - regardless of where they write - need to attract an audience. Passionate fans will loyally read stories and often provide feedback. The Bad Todays sports writers have to deal with an ever-changing market. Many newspapers are cutting staff and some are closing. To advance, sports writers typically have to move from one city to the next, climbing the ladder in bigger media markets. Travel can become a grind for some sports writers. For instance, major league baseball teams play 81 games on the road each season. Not only do sports writers not make much money, they often are covering athletes at the other end of the spectrum. If a sportswriter covers a top professional team, he or she typically will be writing about millionaire players, coaches, general managers, and team owners. Most sportswriters will never make seven-figure salaries. The gap can create problems. Typical sportswriters will work weekends and holidays. The biggest games often are contested on these days. And while the increase in bloggers has created opportunities for aspiring sportswriters to showcase their work, print newspapers, once the backbone of sports journalism, has shrunk considerably in the last decade.News stories of laid-off journalists are commonplace. Getting Started Todays sportswriters are college graduates, typically with journalism degrees. Besides their journalism classes, sports writers typically write for their college newspaper. Colleges also have sports information departments that typically rely on student interns. This can provide a good experience. Starting before college, by covering sports for a high school paper, for instance, is also a good idea. Many sportswriters were never the star athlete, or they may have never played sports. But all sports writers love sports and competition. Playing a sport or closely following a sport provides important experience. Job Ideas The Associat ed Press Sports Editors maintain a job board on their site. After college, sports writers typically start at a paper in a small town and work their way up to bigger publications. They also may find employment at one of the many sports websites like ESPN.com. League sites like NFL.com and MLB.comalso employ sports writers, as do many professional teams. Finally, sports journalism can lead to other opportunities.
